What is
Do Not Call Compliance?
In the summer of 2003 (Article)
the Federal Trade Commission launched the Federal Do Not Call Registry.
This service allowed consumers to add their home telephone numbers to a database
called the Federal Do Not Call List. Upon the release of this registry,
businesses who had not had any dealings with a consumer in the last 18 months
were required to check their phone number before contacting them about goods or
services. Violators of this policy, big and small, faced fines up to $11,000 per
call.
The FTC offers the Federal Do Not Call List for
download in the form of large text databases. The task of searching for phone
numbers in these colossal files was so time consuming it threatened the
productivity of the entire telemarketing industry. This created a market for
fast, easy solutions that would allow a company to comply with the new law.
As of January 1, 2005 the FTC now requires all
telemarketers to check their lists monthly against the registry, making it
nearly impossible to comply with law without using some type of Do Not Call
compliance solution.
